Tragedy struck the family of José Ramón Abundis when his grandson, Denilson Cuéllar García, a boy just three years old, was killed in his arms after a shooting in Apodaca, Nuevo León, Mexico, last Friday, April 11.

The man stated that there had never been any prior threats or other conflicts, so he cannot explain how his little grandson’s life was suddenly taken away.

José Ramón tearfully recounts that they were sitting outside his house, like many other nights, enjoying family time.

Denilson was with him, riding a small ATV. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until a motorcycle turned onto the street, and without saying a word, one of the occupants fired a shot.

“I managed to see that he was carrying something, and then he shot. I tried to cover him, but no, I couldn’t do anything. By the time I tried to cover him, my grandson had already fallen, shot in the temple,” José Ramón told Hechos Noche, his voice breaking.

Denilson was just three years old, and according to his family, they had recently celebrated his birthday in January with a small party.

The youngest boy loved roosters, just like his father, his relative recalled. He was a happy, restless child who was beginning to enjoy the little things that mark childhood.

Today, those memories are all that remains for his family. Outside the home where the attack occurred, a candle was placed in his honor, while the questions remain unanswered, and no one is held accountable.

“And why with one? If someone is dedicated to doing a good job… I don’t know why with us,”  asks José Ramón, grandfather of the murdered child.

His family, he claims, lives an honest life, without getting into trouble. There were no prior threats, suspicious calls, or warnings. No one asked them for money, nor did they intimidate them. Everything happened suddenly, brutally, and without explanation.
