Two different stories but united by the same objective and ideal: “SERVE MEXICO” unfortunately ended last night, May 17, 2025, a date that will be forever marked in many families, but specifically in 2, they lost the most valuable thing in them, 2 exemplary young Mexicans who paid with their lives for that dream that many yearn for and that sometimes, due to various circumstances, few can achieve.
Being a sailor means having the mystique of adventure in your blood, setting sail without fear of the unknown, always sailing with the desire for “Fair Winds!” and “Fair Seas!” so you can always reach safe harbors.
For Cadet América Yamilet Sánchez, originally from Xalapa, Veracruz, and for the sailor (clasmar) Adal Jair Marcos, originally from San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca. Both members of the crew of the training ship Cuauhtémoc from now on will sail towards the eternal winds guided by the stars that always illuminate and guide the navigator’s path.
The young cadet América Yamilet was part of the crew of the emblematic Mexican ship, and was on one of the ship’s masts when the mishap occurred. An extraordinary athlete, medalist in various swimming competitions, she would soon turn 21.
The naval community and Xalapa society deeply regret this loss.
ADAL JAIR MARCO is the second crew member to die from the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship after last night’s accident with the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, New York.
Jair Marco held the rank of Sailor and was originally from the town of San Mateo del Mar, an indigenous community of the Huave Zapotec ethnic group located 18 km east of Salina Cruz, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca.
A studious and hard-working young man who had gradually forged his dreams, one of which was to belong to the Navy and even more so as a sailor aboard the training ship Cuauhtémoc, an exemplary young man, as remembered by his friends and family.
2 stories that unfortunately did not end as they would have liked, as a Mexican it hurts me for so many young people who still have that desire to serve their country and it is sad to see them end like this

Sheinbaum asks not to politicize the Cuauhtémoc ship accident
Regarding the possible causes of the incident, Sheinbaum declined to speculate until the official investigation is completed.

President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday urged people not to politicize the Cuauhtémoc ship accident that occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, in which a cadet and a sailor died, while several crew members were injured.
“We regret that this is being used politically because it was an accident,” he told the media in a brief interview during his tour of the state of Baja California Sur.
The Mexican president also confirmed that the injured are recovering and that the Navy is expected to issue an official statement updating them on their condition in the coming hours.

Sheinbaum reiterated that the matter is being handled by the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chancellery), while highlighting coordination with local authorities, the embassy, and the United States government.
“First and foremost, the wounded are being treated, and our solidarity always goes out to the cadet and the sailor who died,” he said.
Regarding the possible causes of the incident, Sheinbaum declined to speculate until the official investigation is concluded and noted that these are being determined jointly by Mexican and U.S. authorities.
